** Kristy is not accepting new clients at this time.
Kristy is the Founder and Owner and of Dr. Brecke Counseling Group. She is also a board approved supervisor for the Minnesota Board of Behavioral Health and Therapy.
She was raised in a middle class family in St. Paul and right here in Eagan. Her ongoing career goal is to improve access to treatment and remove stigma. As the founder, her love to help others has started to shift more to supporting her incredible staff of clinicians. She still has a small caseload to continue to add meaning and diversity to her work. Kristy believes access should be universal and top quality.
After 25 years of experience in the social service field and 17 years as a fully licensed therapist, Kristy continues to love working with her clients each week. The opportunity to spend any moment with a person, in a safe and supportive space where vulnerability leads to connection and growth, doesn’t get any better. While helping her clients gain a healthier perspective on their lives, she aims to help them recognize the shame they have been carrying around, leading to unhealthy choices and actions. Once a person is ‘unburdened’ life is never the same.
Her educational journey includes a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Minnesota, a Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from St. Thomas University, and a Doctorate in Marriage and Family Therapy from Argosy University.
It may be hard to believe but Kristy is not a traditional learner. She attributes most of her knowledge to her life experiences. She has found this to be just as important to her work as her formal education. Beyond her academic achievements, her professional experiences are broad. The variety of settings has strengthened her therapeutic approach and helped her broaden some of her own believes she held previously.
She has worked across most mental health settings; residential treatment for dual diagnosis in Alaska, Wilderness Therapy with adolescents in California and Oregon, crisis therapy for families in the twin cities 7 county area (mostly North Minneapolis) and now has settled into outpatient work for the last 12 years, as this lends to the best stability for her family. Kristy strongly values inclusion and diversity.
She enjoys working with individuals from different backgrounds, believing in collaborative therapy where both client and therapist learn from each other. Her primary aim is to create a comfortable and empowering environment where clients feel in control of their healing journey.
Outside of work, Kristy’s personal experiences greatly inform her professional life. She has traveled extensively, exploring cultures worldwide. The more she has traveled the more her perspective of the world and people have expanded. Additionally, anyone that knows Kristy personally or professionally, knows her obsession with the outdoors. Her love of the outdoors expands to her practice because she strongly encourages her clients to also use nature as a therapeutic tool.
Her interests span sociology, politics, religion, spirituality, child development, and the arts. Kristy is committed to finding balance in her life and helping others do the same. She finds that helping you identify your strengths and accepting your weaknesses will lead you to whatever dream you have for yourself.
Kristy has been married for 16 yrs to a very patient and supportive husband and is a mother of twin boys that are 15 yrs old. When she is not working with you on your healing process, she is spending time with family. Some of her favorite activities include: home improvement projects, writing, puzzling, interior design, acrylic painting, lifting weights, backpacking, canoeing, skiing, boating, all kinds of biking, hiking, and always trying something new. She has a hard time sitting still as she has lots of energy from prioritizing rest and eating healthy. When she does sit down, it’s on a boat at a bonfire or to people watch any and everywhere. Sitting still and being present is one of life’s best endless lessons.
