Specialties:
Alex specializes in Mood Disorders (Bi-Polar, Depression), PTSD, Trauma, OCD and ADHD. He has special interest in working with those whose parents or partners (or past partners) struggle with BPD (Borderline Personality Disorder) or NPD (Narcissistic Personality Disorder).
Alex established his talent in the field quickly and is referred to from other professionals in the field on a weekly basis. This is in part due to how effective his treatment modalities are, but also because he is easy to work with and extremely dedicated to his clients growth.
He uses the most evidence backed interventions. This includes DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy), CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). Alex is fully trained and certified in EMDR. This certification is highly respected due the length of time (minimal of 18 months) it takes to complete. It also requires the clinician to be supervised during this time from a certified EMDR clinical trainers. EMDR is most well-known when working with clients that have experienced trauma. It is less well-known to use this technique with rumination and stuck thoughts, as Alex often does.
About:
Alexander or ‘Alex’ is full of energy for life. He was born with focus and determination you don’t often see in people. Challenges (your and his) energize him. While you may feel overwhelmed by your past and present issues, he sees them as temporary roadblocks. Seeing them through a new lens, you will find new opportunities and strengths within you, you did not know existed.
His natural born interest in people and eagerness to help, translates exceptionally to his therapeutic work. He focuses on understanding what may be holding you back from feeling worthy. From the first few minutes of sitting down with Alex, you feel at ease and realize that you are right where you are supposed to be.
He balances his ability to connect and validate with his exceptional analytical and clinical skills. He weaves his training in DBT and CBT with his authentic approach to help you move at a comfortable yet effective pace towards goals you never envisioned.
He says “we often can’t accept who we are if we reject the reality of how we are. Rejecting how we are stymies who we wish to become.”
Alex McLeod is an MSW and LICSW who graduated top of his class from Saint Catherine University. Being top of class is only one way he has proven he thrives on hard work. He also doesn’t shy away from difficult client work. Early in his career, he worked with incarcerated persons in a therapeutic settings utilizing DBT and EMDR techniques. This same work ethic shows through in his work with his clients.
He is featured on the cover of IMPAAKT (click here) Magazine’s Most Influential Mental Health Leaders Edition. He was recognized due to his interest in personality trait theory, human behavioral development, trauma and most importantly for his exceptional clinical skills.
If he gets you into his office, he will get you to come back and not quit until you are the person you always knew you could be.
Additional Work Experience:
Alex sees individuals who have historically been marginalized. Due to his work within the prison system with adolescent males, he knows how to reach those who have suffered early in life He now primarily works with adults and feels the client best suited to his style of therapy is someone who can appreciate an informal approach, is okay with laughter, and understands that they want to make a change, not for the world, but for themselves.
If you are experiencing depression, social isolation, restlessness, or are, “wanting to feel normal again,” “feeling crazy” or are so anxious that you feel paralyzed, he can help. Maybe you are struggling to be present when you are doing an enjoyable activity or struggling to stay focused when it’s important to do so (work, home tasks, difficult yet important relationships), he can help. If you are struggling to execute the tasks, or spending too much time worrying, he can help.
Personal life:
In his personal time, Alex has collected Pokémon cards since childhood and continues to collect to this day.
