Dr. Kristy Brecke

** Kristy is not accepting new clients at this time.

Kristy is the Owner and Clinical Director of Dr. Brecke Counseling Group. She was raised in a middle class family in St. Paul and right here in Eagan. From a young age, she could see the underserved need for mental health treatment and the problems that arise in families when access is limited or the stigma is too strong to see how powerful the treatment is. This awareness and compassion for helping is what continues to make her love her career and the meaning it brings to her work. She strongly believes access should be universal and top quality.

She is driven to remove the barriers to access as well as the stigma the mental health field currently faces. During her 25 years of experience in the social service field and 17 years as a fully licensed therapist, she is still very compassionate about helping her clients gain the perspective on their lives they have always been yearning for.

Her educational journey includes a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Minnesota, a Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology from St. Thomas University, and a Doctorate in Marriage and Family Therapy from Argosy University.

It may be hard to believe but Kristy is not a traditional learner and has found her life experiences to be just as important to her work as her formal education. Beyond her academic achievements, her professional experiences are broad. The variety of settings has strengthened her therapeutic approach and helped her broaden some of her own believes she held previously.

She has worked across most mental health settings; residential treatment for dual diagnosis in Alaska, wilderness therapy on the West coast, crisis therapy for families in the twin cities 7 county area and now has settled into outpatient work for the last 12 years as this lends to the best stability for her family. Kristy strongly values inclusion and diversity.

She enjoys working with individuals from different backgrounds, believing in collaborative therapy where both client and therapist learn from each other. Her primary aim is to create a comfortable and empowering environment where clients feel in control of their healing journey.

Outside of work, Kristy’s personal experiences greatly inform her professional life. She has traveled extensively, exploring cultures worldwide. The more she has traveled the more her perspective of the world and people have expanded. Additionally, anyone that knows Kristy personally or professionally, knows her obsession with the outdoors. Her love of the outdoors expands to her practice because she strongly encourages her clients to also use nature as a therapeutic tool.

Her interests span sociology, politics, religion, spirituality, child development, and the arts. Kristy is committed to finding balance in her life and helping others do the same. She finds that helping you identify your strengths and accepting your weaknesses will lead you to whatever dream you have for yourself.

Kristy has been married for 15 yrs to a very patient and supportive husband and is a mother of twin boys that are 14 yrs old. When she is not working with you on your healing process, she is spending time with family. Some of her favorite activities include: home improvement projects, writing, puzzling, interior design, acrylic painting, backpacking, canoeing, skiing, boating, all kinds of biking, hiking, and always trying something new. She has a hard time sitting still as she has lots of energy from prioritizing rest and eating healthy. When she does sit down, it’s on a boat at a bonfire or to people watch any and everywhere. Sitting still and being present is one of life’s best endless lessons.
